Are you inspired to get out into the neighborhood, to walk its streets and learn
about Temescal history? Two self-guided walking tours are now available free for
download. For a preview and map of each tour, select one of the following:
Walking Tour 1 Preview
Walking Tour 2 Preview
These two tours were originally published as the booklet, A Walk Through
Temescal. A joint project of Shared Ground and the Oakland Heritage Alliance, it
was researched and written by Jennifer Dowling and Ray Raineri, designed by
Kathryn Hoffman, with the introduction, maps, and updates by Jeff Norman.
The 31 sites described in these two tours are by no means the only interesting
historical places in Temescal. This website will lead you to hundreds more. The
Oakland History Room at the main branch of the Oakland Public Library is also a
good place to learn about Temescal history and Oakland history in general. For
information about other local history resources, click on Links, above.
